This fund was established to provide grants to further the education of qualifying graduating seniors in Murphysboro School District 186 pursuing higher education. The primary focus will be seniors attending college majoring in music education. If there is not a sufficient pool of applicants, a secondary focus will be on students studying agriculture.

Dr. Mugge was born in 1942 in Harrisburg, IL and was the only son of George and Sorado. He served in the United States Air Force 1961-1965 and was a member of the USAFA Band – Drum and Bugle Corp and served in the Office of Special Investigations stationed at the US Air Force Academy. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1970 and continued to receive advanced degrees through his early career and in 1983 earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Education, SIUC.
Dr. Mugge began his career in education in Anna Jonesboro, IL as an English instructor. He quickly advanced to a new role in Hillsboro, IL as Assistant Principal then promoted to Superintendent for 12 years. In 1986, he was hired as Superintendent in Murphysboro where he spent 17 years until retiring in 2003. Upon retiring he volunteered his time and talent to the American Legion Honor Guard playing taps at veteran funerals in Southern Illinois. As well as Murphysboro Elks Lodge, and golfing with his great group of friends.
Dr. Mugge devoted his life to the success of the children. With this dedication he was the visionary for the Southern Region Early Childhood Program and very instrumental in the building of General John A. Logan Elementary School.
Dr. Michael Joyner Mugge passed on Friday, December 6th. “Doc” Mugge was the retired Superintendent of Schools Murphysboro District 186, and a long-time resident of Murphysboro, Illinois.
