THE MISSION

This Scholarship Fund was created by Lila Spencer Neilsen to honor her parents Merwin & Villa Spencer. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Murphysboro High School.

Merwin & Villa Spencer Scholarship

In honor of her parents, Lila Spencer Nielsen has established the Merwin and Villa Spencer Scholarship Fund.  Beginning in the spring of 2019, this fund will provide a 4 year scholarship for a college bound Murphysboro High School Students.

Villa Spencer, born in Alto Pass and raised in Murphysboro, was a kindergarten teacher at the Longfellow School in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s.  Merwin Spencer was born in Oraville, IL in 1892 and died in 1970. He worked as a dispatcher and telegraph agent for the railroad.

The family honors the work of Merwin and Villa Spencer in their community through their support of a Murphysboro student.
